We help birth relatives of adopted adults
SWAN can help birth relatives of adopted adults to make contact with their adopted relatives. Birth relatives are not allowed to have identifying details of their adopted relatives but the law changed in 2005 to allow adoption support agencies to seek adopted adults on behalf of their birth relatives. Sadly SWAN has to charge for this service.
SWAN can offer a free advisory first session to people who live in our subscribing areas; but the main part of the service is chargeable.
SWAN offers a subsidised “Special Rate” in most of our areas – where the applicant pays a small proportion of the charge which is subsidised by their local authority if the applicant can show evidence of a very low income.
SWAN is always keen to develop its services in response to service user feedback.
SWAN cannot guarantee that we will find your relatives or that we can ensure that they want to have contact with you.
If you are having trouble with how you are feeling about being separated from your adopted relative, SWAN can offer you short term counselling free of charge.
SWAN has given me a different perspective about my problems as a birth mother, which is beneficial for the relationship.
