Usually, we will advise against searching until you are at least 25. This is because searching will bring up lots of issues which can disturb your life or you may need long term counselling and a lot of support to cope with your feelings.

Short Term Counselling:

Need to talk about something connected with adoption?

If you are a young adopted person you may have things you want to discuss with an independent counsellor about being adopted. SWAN can provide a short-term counsellor to help you sort things out.

If you want, a SWAN counsellor can help you talk things through with other family members, so that issues can be resolved. SWAN has to act within the child protection regulations so if you tell us about someone who is being hurt or harmed we cannot keep that private, but most things you talk to us about can be confidential if you wish.

Our trained counsellors all have specific knowledge of adoption and the kinds of problems that can arise. We can advise about managing behaviour problems, school issues, contact issues, and many other adoption- related issues. SWAN has a booklist for adopted people and some of these books are in our library of resources and we can lend them to you.

We can also help birth siblings to contact each other.
SWAN has a policy of only tracing adopted adults who are more than twenty five years old.
